NG-STAR
Resistance-based typing of Neisseria gonorrhoeae
The NG-STAR scheme
The MLST-like NG-STAR typing scheme is based on 7 genes associated with antimicrobial resistance. Like MLST, each allele found for each locus is given a unique numerical identifier, while the type code is based on the unique combination of alleles. The seven genes are: penA, mtrR, porB, ponA, gyrA, parC and 23S rRNA. The central registry for the NG-STAR scheme is maintained by the Public Health Agency for Canada - visit their site for more details.
Implementation
The NG-STAR assignments are generated in Pathogenwatch using our in-house MLST/cgMLST software. For more details, visit the MLST section of the documentation.
Alleles or type codes with an * at the start are novel and not in the current version of the NG-STAR database being usef by Pathogenwatch. These codes are unique and specific to the allele or combination of alleles and can be used reliably within Pathogenwatch across versions.
Acknowledgments
We would like to thank the Public Health Agency for Canada for allowing the CGPS to download and locally host the NG-STAR scheme for public use.
